On ZOOM

This class will be devoted to how to write a food review -- that weird, niche column in McSweeney's. We'll go behind the scenes via interviews I've conducted with the editors (why it's the best way to crack McSweeney's, what the editors are looking for, and common submission mistakes) and break down the steps for how to write a food review of your own.

Note: This is a generative class, so you'll be asked to bring a new (to you) food and do some writing!

A little about your teacher:

Miriam Jayaratna is a clinical psychologist and humor writer whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, McSweeney's, The Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, Reductress, and elsewhere. Her pilot, "We Have to Stop Now," was a second-rounder in the 2026 Austin Film Festival. Miriam has many strong opinions about food, some of which are toxic (for instance, chocolate chips do NOT belong in baked goods).
